Kipling Elementary!

Wow, what a great bunch of 3rd graders they have at Kipling Elementary in Deerfield, Il. I had the great fortune of speaking to all three 3rd grade classrooms about India for their social studies class. We covered the history, geography, wildlife, cultures, languages, religion and poverty in India. That's a lot to talk about but the kids were amazing and followed along. They had so many interesting questions! We got to cover the pressing need in the country and then touch on some of the many organizations that are trying to do something. I briefly described our crazy charity adventure and the kids really got in to it.

Team Good Korma will try and update our blog from the road, when we find the sporadic internet cafe, for all you classrooms like Kipling Elementary that are following our rally.

When I return from India I will return to Kipling to tell the kids stories from the Indian road and show photos and video of the trip. I am looking forward to seeing all my new friends in Deerfield.

Special thanks to my Godson, Jared Boss, for coming up with the idea of having me speak at his school and for helping make it all happen. Thanks Jared!

Sponsors are signing on!!

We've got our first corporate sponsors lined up to support us on our trip!!

First up- We are proud to announce our partnership with SOLIO.
Solio makes the most advanced portable solar powered chargers on the market and they have agreed to donate a couple for our trip. So now, while suffering from potential heat stroke and hallucinatory dehydration, we can at least sleep well at night knowing we'll have a powered up ipod to keep us company. They are a great new company and have been extremely generous and we hope you'll all check them out.

We are also proud to announce that Getty Images has agreed to donate a print from their archive collection to help us with our fundraising for mercy corps. We will be auctioning off the print during our party on Dec. 2nd.

And finally 'Competitive Brokerage Service' has expressed true generosity in supporting our cause. They are a Long Island based life/health insurance agency and I'm hoping they DON'T come in handy. You can contact them at 516.546.9000.

More great news to come!!!

An Introduction to the Team

Good Korma is American rickshaw team formed by photographer Michael Cogliantry (NYC) cinematographer Adam Sternin (NYC) and art director Anthony Munoz (Chicago). We are one of a few dozen teams coming from all over the world (mostly England) who are attempting to make history (sort of) by driving these machines from the bottom to the top of India.

Upon our arrival in the country, we will pause briefly for a game of Cricket (if anyone has any idea how this game is played, please write us as we’re completely lost in this department) followed by tea and cakes (no problem here). We'll then start revving our engines and begin heading north. We plan to stop only to wet our whistles for the occasional gin and tonic at specially selected refreshment points.

Please… This is completely insane… tell me why on earth you are doing this???
The Rickshaw Run is all about raising huge amounts of wedge (British term for cheese, which in some situations is the British term for money) for a great charity (the organizers have chosen Mercy Corps International). Many auto-rickshaw taxi drivers are forced to live in a state of poverty because they don't have the cash to buy their rickshaw. They borrow the money or rent the rickshaw often at extortionate rates. While they can earn a living from the taxi fares, a large amount of it, often more than half goes to pay of the debt or pay the rent for the vehicle. Giving a rickshaw to a poor family is huge life changing event that enables them to earn a living without the burden of impossible debt. When we get to the finish line, we will hand over the rickshaw to an NGO working in Siligury, monitored by Mercy Corps, who will distribute them to the most needy cases. Any additional funds raised over the cost of our rickshaw (£650. / $1350.) will be also donated to Mercy Corps for their amazing and much needed work in India.

Charity Information: Good Korma selects Mercy Corps International

A little information about who and what we are raising money for:
The Himalayan foothills around Darjeeling, India are home to some of the world's finest teas - and some of Asia's poorest families.

Mercy Corps and partner Tazo Tea Company are collaborating to bring clean water, economic opportunities and technical training to isolated villages in the area, helping families pull out of poverty and lift themselves to new heights.
